As with most restaurants, it boils down to two things: food and service. (I'm not to generally comment on atmosphere.) La Palma was 1 for 2 in those categories.
I'll start with the good: the food! I loved the food. I got the Burrito Cancun with steak and it was delicious. I also loved the salsa. I don't like spicy food, and the salsa wasn't hot at all. I know making it hot is an option for those who are so inclined though. The chips were good and crunchy, although not as fresh as they sometimes are at Mexican places. Also, as a bonus, they have Coke products. Big plus for me.
Now for the bad: the service. We were there around 2 for a late lunch and there were only a couple more tables with people in the place. There were two waitresses working the room. We immediately got our chips and salsa and our orders were taken, but it was downhill from there. For as slow as they were, our food took unusually long. When I eat Mexican I'm used to very quick service regardless of how busy they are, but it was the opposite here. After we got our drinks, neither waitress came anywhere near our table. When we wanted a refill on chips we had to get the waitress's attention while they were putting up a Christmas tree. That was frustrating. They never asked if everything was good, or offered drink refills. We also needed to place a to-go order for somebody else and they never came to give us a chance. Fortunately once we did, it was done a lot faster than our food was.
Overall I'd recommend the place. The food was worth the poor service, and somebody who I was with has been there many times and said the service isn't usually that bad.
It's nice to have a good Mexican place in s small town. The interior is large and wide open. Not much Mexican flair or decoration to enhance the experience. The dinning room seemed very cold.
The chips were good, crisp and not too greasy. The salsa was thicker and tasty. Not much heat so if you like hotter you will have to ask.
On this trip I had a three cheese enchilada dinner with avocado and chicken. I liked the cheese enchilada - very cheesy! The chicken and Avocado was kind of a mess and didn't accent the food much. Overall it was okay.
You will enjoy the staff - they are very friendly and prompt. The food service is also quick!
We ate there for the first time at the recommendation of a friend. The salsa was very fresh & the chips were pretty normal. I don't like too much spice & it was perfect for me. My husband ordered some chicken quesadillas. Said they were excellent. I had a steak burrito that was too big for me to eat it all there and it was excellent. The only problems we experience was a significant delay in getting someone at the register to take our money. My advice...raise the prices a bit & add a server or hostess. It's the ONLY thing we disliked about our evening.
For being in a small town this place was alright. I ordered chicken enchiladas with rice. It tasted ok but not the best. The chips and salsa was better then my meal it's self. The place was clean for the most part. My cousin and I were the only ones in there during lunch time and the service was slower then it should of been for only having two adults and two kids. But What made me upset was when I ordered my meal I also ordered a plan hamburger for my dog, for when we leave. Well it was time to leave and I told the waitress l will take that hamburger to go now. But her response was like she forgot to even put it in. So we ended up waiting for 15 mins and when she brought it out it was so small, she even asked me if I wanted another one. But I didn't want to wait longer. Not A place I would go to again.
Hartford city is lucky to have la Palma. The food is outstanding! Servers do a great job and remember what you like to order. Mexican restaurants in southern California are not as good. La Palma beats them all! Favorites: Victor special, arroz con pollo, braised pork tacos. The new red salsa is hot! Whoeeee!
